Happy New Year! The start of another calendar encourages many of us to take stock of where we are in our lives ... and if we aren't where we want to be, how are we going to get there?
So today brings a flurry of resolutions ... but I refuse to make any. Don't get me wrong ... I do see areas of my life I'd like to improve. But unlike goals (which y'all know I love to set as a Type A Virgo!), they can be vague. "I resolve to workout more." "I resolve to be nicer." And so on. When they are broken, they can bring us feelings of guilt and failure.
We are all human. We aren't perfect. We should be easier on ourselves!
New Year's isn't the only time of year I set goals, but it feels like a good time to do so as I'm winding down from 6 weeks of moving and holiday activity (and a few pounds gained back along with it all).
I'm setting just one goal for myself for 2014: to walk 10,000 steps a day. Many health articles cite this as a healthy amount of activity. I can use the FitBit to track it easily. And the healthier me that will come along with committing to make physical activity a daily priority will allow me to take on other goals, be a better family member/friend/employee/volunteer ... and with just one major goal, it will make focusing on achieving it simple.
So friends, I challenge you to join me in this goal, or to think about your own simple goal for the year.
And if resolutions work for you ... go for it! I've just had more years that they haven't than they have!
